How to spot fake or resealed Japanese Pokémon booster packs

Japanese Pokémon booster boxes are some of the most sought-after products in the hobby, and that makes them a target for fakes and resealed packs. The good news: most problems can be spotted with a few simple checks before you open anything. Here's the checklist we use.

1. Check the box shrink wrap

Most current Japanese booster boxes come shrink-wrapped. Look for loose, bubbly or melted-looking film, uneven seams or a wrap that feels too thick. Compare it with clear photos of a genuine box of the same set. Note: Japanese shrink wrap sometimes has a lot of variation.

2. Look closely at the print

Fakes often have blurry text, wrong colours, spelling mistakes in the Japanese text, or a set logo that looks slightly off. Use your phone camera to zoom in.

3. Inspect the pack seams

Genuine packs have clean, even crimped seams at the top and bottom. Glue marks, wavy or re-pressed crimps and tiny tears are warning signs of resealing.

4. Don't trust "weighing" sellers

Some people weigh packs to guess which ones hold heavier foil cards, then sell the rest. Buying loose packs from unknown sellers carries this risk; sealed boxes from a trusted shop avoid it.

5. Check the cards themselves

Fake cards often feel too glossy or too thin, have a wrong font or HP layout, or show different colours from genuine copies. When in doubt, compare with a card you know is real.

6. Buy from a trusted seller

The safest way to avoid fakes is to buy from a shop that sources from reliable distributors and stands behind its products.
