About this set
- Set name: Expansion Pack
- Known outside Japan as: Base Set
Set overview
The Expansion Pack is where the Pokémon Trading Card Game began: released in Japan on 20 October 1996, it is the set known outside Japan as Base Set. In Japan it launched alongside a Starter Pack, and the first cards were a Pikachu and Jigglypuff promo given away in CoroCoro magazine shortly before the main release. The Japanese set has 102 cards featuring Generation I Pokémon; the English Base Set followed on 9 January 1999.
Notable cards
Its holo rares include some of the most famous cards in the hobby, such as Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, Mewtwo, Alakazam, Gyarados and Zapdos. Japanese Base Set cards are ordered differently from the English release, by type, rarity and Pokédex number. For collectors of vintage cards, this is the original set that started it all.
