About this set
  • Set name: Vending Machine Series 1 (Blue)
  • Official Japanese name: Expansion Sheet

Set overview

The Vending Machine cards (officially Expansion Sheet in Japanese) were sold in Japan from vending machines as randomised sheets from which the cards were peeled. Series 1 (Blue) was released on 23 March 1998. Like Series 2, it consists of eighteen numbered sheets with three cards each, plus cardboard damage counters and coins; every sheet always contains the same cards.

Notable cards

The cards are printed on glossy card stock, unlike regular matte cards, and the backs of the sheets show Pokémon from six locations in Kanto. The series was released only in Japanese, and the name Vending Machine Series is a fan name used by collectors. It is a fun corner of early Japanese collecting that many fans never saw at the time.
